Jessica Alba began her television and movie appearances at the age of 13. She rose to prominence in the television series Dark Angel (2000 - 2002). Alba was the lead actress in Dark Angel.

Early Years

Jessica Alba was born in Pomona, California to parents Catherine and Mark Alba. Her mother is of Danish/French Canadian descent and her father of Mexican American descent. Jessica has a younger brother called Joshua. Her family moved a lot in her early years. Her father's Air Force career took the family to Biloxi, Mississippi when she was an infant. Three years later the family moved back to California, then to Del Rio, Texas before settling back in California when Jessica was nine years old. She has described her family as being very conservative and herself very liberal.

 

Jessica had a multitude of physical maladies during her early life. She suffered from collapsed lungs twice and had pneumonia 4 to 5 times a year. She also had a ruptured appendix and a tonsillar cyst. During her childhood she spent a lot of time in hospital and has had asthma since she was a child. Jessica graduated from high school at the age of 16 and then attended the Atlantic Theater Company.





Jessica was interested in acting since she was five. When she was 11 years old she won the grand prize in an acting competition and received free acting classes. Nine months later she was signed by an agent. She first appeared on film in 1994 in the feature Camp Nowhere.
When she was a child she appeared in national television commercials for Nintendo and J.C Penney. She also featured in several independent films. In 1994 she had a recurring role as Jessica in three episodes of Nickelodeon comedy series, The Secret World of Alex Mack. She then starred as Maya in the first two seasons of television series Flipper.
